Côtes de Bourg

Type

The red wines from the area have a deep, dark colour that is a sign of their solid constitution. On the nose, they are characterized by aromas of red fruit, but in the great vintages, notes of prune and black fruits also appear. These notes are complemented by subtle aromas of wood and vanilla.

On the palate, the red Côtes de Bourg contains silky tannins and a well-rounded nature thanks to the addition of Malbec. However, the character varies according to the nature of the soil and location of the vines. Wine from the first slopes is full-bodied with rich tannins that can be a little rough in the first years. Those from the central lines feature rounder tannins and chocolate notes, and those from the eastern side are less robust but just as elegant.

The white wines from this vineyard have an alluring yellow colour with green reflections. On the nose, you can expect a typical bouquet with floral notes. On the palate, you will be greeted by a fat and harmonious flavour with citrus notes.

Pairing

Red meat, game, charcuterie platter, cooked cheese, seafood, fish in sauce, white meat, pies.

History

Bourg has been an important center for wine since the Middle Ages. Its vineyards located on the estuary helped to boost trade and transportation from the region. Côtes de Bourg, also known as Bourg or bourgeois, is a French wine produced in the Bourg region on the right bank of the Dordogne and Gironde Rivers, approximately 35 kilometers from Bordeaux.

The Bourg territory extends over 15 wine-growing municipalities: Bayon-sur-Gironde, Bourg, Comps, Gauriac, Lansac, Mombrier, Prignac-et-Marcamps, Pugnac, Saint-Ciers-de-Canesse, Saint-Seurin-de-Bourg, Saint-Trojan, Samonac, Tauriac, Teuillac, and Villeneuve. The vineyards cover 3,850 hectares of red grape varieties, with Merlot dominating, but also Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and some Malbec. The Sauvignon grape predominates the area. The region produces around 220,000 hectolitres per year and around 1,200 hectolitres of white. The area has around 550 producers who export 15% of their annual production, of which 80% is exported to Europe.
